THE WAY AHEAD

The National Park’s Recreation Management Strategy for the whole New Forest area has been published in draft form.  It is a good start.  I will be very interested in how it is taken forward.  Its “Vision 2028” states  “In 2028, the New Forest National Park (New Forest) will be a model of excellence in how to enable recreation within a sensitive and fragile environment.”  It is intended that Recreation will occur in the right place, at the right time and in ways that respect the New Forest, its special qualities and the environment’s capacity to provide and sustain a high quality of experience.”

The Coastal Access issue, part of the Draft Marine Bill is being scrutinised by a parliamentary committee and its first report has been published.  There are issues of concern but things are moving forward.

You may remember our concern about the “Right to Apply” consultation paper which was about the diversion and extinguishment of rights of way in certain circumstances.  Well defra has recently published some conclusions following its consultation.  Although committed to introducing a Right to Apply” defra has decided that the legislation as it stands would not achieve what it wants.  An alternative solution is awaited.

I have had some initial discussion about the installation of some kissing or self-closing gates on the Avon Valley Path in Ibsley.  It is likely that we will be asked to help under the Hampshire Paths Partnership scheme.  I do not have any details at present but if you are interested in joining a working party please let me know and I will contact you when I have further information.

I am writing this 2 days after the Ellingham Show and I have just managed to get the gazebo and displays dry and packed away.  The weather was disappointing and even worse than at the Fordingbridge Patronal Festival where our stand was the last left up due to strong winds.  I am hoping for better weather at Frogham Fair.

Don’t forget that our evening meetings are starting a month earlier this year at members’ request.  The first meeting is on Monday 1st September.  I hope to see many of you then.                  Ruth
