THE WAY AHEAD

Once again I think I should update you on progress on the Breamore railway line path.  We have made good headway with the clearance and it is likely that we will need only 2 more sessions.  On the last 2 clearance days, we have had bonfires to dispose of some of the vegetation cleared and cooked jacket potatoes.  We consumed these at the end of each morning’s work.  They were delicious.  It would be good if more of you joined us in the work.  Last week I took a look at the new bridge being constructed.  It is larger than I expected, should be very robust.  Construction is not yet complete but should be soon.

A recent survey has reported that two thirds of people over the age of 60 consider walking to be their favourite form of exercise.  I would certainly consider it to be mine.  Much as I like walking I am not in the same league as 2 others we have heard about on a recent TV programme.  Rory Stewart described a walk of 6,000 miles taking 21 months that he made from Turkey through Afghanistan to Bangladesh.  He also described Lawrence of Arabia’s 1,000mile walk from Constantinople to Syria.  Lawrence walked for 9-10 hours per day wearing

formal British clothes.  I doubt if any of us would like to repeat these walks although we would benefit from better navigational aids and modern walking gear if we did.  Some of the terrain was far more difficult than any we encounter locally.  We have had difficulty completing some of our local walks recently having had to call off several walks because of the snow and ice.  One walk did take place in the snow and was enjoyed by all who managed to get to the start point.  (See later for pictures – Ed)  I am looking forward to spring and hoping for better weather and walking conditions from now on so that we can all get out walking.

Don’t forget our AGM on 22nd March.  We will be appointing a new Treasurer and Membership Secretary as Keith Davis and Alison Sherman are retiring from their respective roles.  After the formal proceedings we will have a presentation by Rowan Brockhurst entitled “Footpaths in Peril – Some Reminiscences”.  Rowan has found some slides showing the state of some of our rights of way in the early days of our Society.  It should be interesting and hopefully illustrate the ways in which we have made a difference.
Ruth
